IS IT TIME TO REPLACE YOUR RUGS?

When you are renovating or building a new home, you need to think about every aspect of the house. One of the most important aspects is the floor. The flooring of your home is the base for everything that happens in your house, it is also one of the ways your home is insulated. During the cold months of the winter, the ground cools down, colder than the surrounding air, making it slower to heat up during the course of a day. That means a lot of the heat in your home is lost through the floor. Alternately, during the summer, the ground stays warm much longer than the surrounding air. So, a lot of heat enters your home through the floor. Keeping a rug on your floor will help insulate against temperature changes. It’s not just a way to keep your toes warm, it actually makes a significant difference in the heating and cooling of your home.

Which Rugs?

So, when you’re deciding if you want to replace your rug, you need to think about how your current rug is serving you. If it’s still a rug that’s in good condition, it might not be the most insulating kind. It might be a newer style of rug with polyester or rubber backing. These are cheap and easy to install, but they don’t insulate very well. Even if your rug is in good condition, if it has a non-insulating nap, you need to replace it. A wool rug is an excellent replacement.  A wool rug is great because it is a natural material, which means that your rug will be made from a renewable resource. It is also incredibly warm. The many soft fibres of wool create tiny traps for air. Those pockets of air are the actual way that wool keeps the warmth. During the summer, a wool rug forms a barrier that traps the heat coming up through the floor.  If you’re building a new home, install wool rugs as soon as you build it. The Base

Building a base for a rug depends on the backing of the rug, as well as the type of floor you already have. For renovations, choose a floor that is affordable and easy to maintain, especially if you plan to have a rug on it frequently. Vinyl tiles are a popular choice, because they are low maintenance and durable. If you have a rubber backing on your wool rug, you can roll it over top of vinyl with no concerns.

If you want a wool rug that is lightweight, warm, and soft, invest in one that doesn’t actually have backing. These rugs are just the wool, without the rubberised coating on the back. That means that the softness or warmth of the wool will not be compromised. However, if you are installing your rug on a wood, concrete, or vinyl floor, you’ll need to buy a vinyl underlay to keep your rug from slipping. The separate underlay is better than a built-in vinyl backing, because it allows you to move your rug with ease.
